Frances Chang is a Brooklyn-based experimental songwriter and producer. Largely self-taught as a musician, Chang’s output has long been marked by a sense of unconventionality and surprise. Born to immigrant parents in Chicago and raised in New York, Chang’s musical practice grew largely autonomously through bedroom recordings. Her formative live experiences were shaped by DIY punk. In 2022 Chang departed from her then band, giant peach, and self-released support your local nihilist, her first solo album under her name, marking a return to a more studio-crafted and intimate sound. During the production of 2024’s Psychedelic Anxiety, she began collaborating with engineer and bass player Andréa Schiavelli (Eyes of Love), an old acquaintance, and Liza Winter (birthing hips) on drums. The three formed a live trio and toured the album before disbanding at the end of 2024.

In order to write been thinking bout confession, her third solo album and first released via RVNG Intl., Frances traded her usual guitar for a piano. The album finds stark, up-close vocals guiding idiosyncratic instrumentation that vacillates between the digital and the analog. In the lead-up to the album's release, Chang performed solo as sole support for Cate Le Bon’s 2026 US tour and played her songs as a duo with Schiavelli on a string of dates in support of Bill Callahan, as well as opened for The Bad Plus’ final New York show.
